Jessie noticed that Lucas smiled at her while she complimented him. That seemed normal, everyone liked to get compliments when they were good at something. Now they might not like a compliment when they think they did a good job, she knew she’d snapped at people for that. Wait… she’d snapped at Lucas hadn’t she? She vaguely recalled being called brave, and she’d gotten angry. Of course she knew why, she wasn’t brave, and she didn’t want people lifting her up and thinking her cowardice was valor. But she knew what she said was true, and apparently he wasn’t going to argue. He nodded and looked a bit embarrassed, but Jessie knew him better than that, it would take more than that to truly embarrass Lucas.
“Aw, shucks, Jessie…” A phrase you didn’t hear all that often. Except perhaps in old hillbilly movies, she cringed at the poor grammar and spitting. She would have formerly made fun of the hats too, but she saw a boy around school who wore a cowboy hat, and he was nice, so she’d refrain from mocking the hats… for now. “ya’re gonna make me turn strawberry red.” He said, then laughed. Jessie laughed too. Sure, she was going to embarrass anyone, more likely the other way around. “But, good, ‘cause Ah lost myself with that last one, so at least one of us got it.” Lucas chuckled and winked.
“I’m good like that.” She said, giving him a mock Oh-yes-I-am-that-amazing-but-totally-modest look. Then he looked at her, seriously, tilting his head. Oh no, what now?
“And what about ya, Jessie?” What about her what? Really, this couldn’t be good. “How come I don’t see ya with a guy on each arm and a gaggle of girls behind ya”?”
Jessie laughed lightly. “A gaggle of girls? Well, a gaggle being a group of geese… but besides that. Why don’t I socialize? A little thing I like to call ‘Fear of Rejection.’ Pretty simple. If I want to talk to someone I think that if I try… they will just look at me weird and think ‘Why is she talking to us? We don’t… want to talk to her.’ But they might not say anything. So I don’t want to impose on people. Just afraid, basically. Or… It could just be that I’m too modest to walk around with a guy on each arm and a gaggle of girls behind me around the school, so other, less popular people, won’t be jealous.” Jessie shrugged, giving Lucas a smirk. “Take your pick, I suppose.”

“I’m good like that.” Jessie gave him a mock look of superiority. Lucas bowed his head respectively, clasping his hands together. "Ah am not worthy, O Great Jessie..."
He smiled as she laughed lightly and began to explain. Or… It could just be that I’m too modest to walk around with a guy on each arm and a gaggle of girls behind me around the school, so other, less popular people, won’t be jealous. Take your pick, I suppose.”
Lucas was frowning now. So she didn't want to be social because she was afraid people would reject her, while he was just... uninterested? It was funny how people were so different that way. Lucas never really thought on rejection. If someone didn't like him he probably didn't like them, it was that simple.
"Ah see," he said after a while, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees while still sitting cross legged. He smiled at her gently. "Well, ya didn't impose on me."
And it was true.

Well at first Lucas seemed fairly calm and pretty happy, until Jessie neared the end of her mini monologue. Now Lucas was frowning, she was starting to wonder if he realized how it made her feel when he frowned? He frowned, she frowned, it was contagious. But not in the good way, like with laughter, that was good when it was contagious, but frowning, not so much. All that she’d said was true. Well that last part about being modest, that wasn’t true, hey, if she could have a guy on each arm and a gaggle of girls, or even geese, she’d take it in a heart beat. Well, sometimes she wouldn’t, there were certain people she’d keep, even if she had to give up a gaggle of girls and a guy on each arm. But she didn’t think that it was ever going to come up, so she didn’t need to dwell on it any longer.
“Ah see,” He said. Jessie smiled softly, watching him lean forward. “Well, ya didn’t impose on me.”
Jessie smiled sweetly, looking at her hands for a moment. It was good he’d said that. Sure, she knew she hadn’t imposed on him when they met. It was possible, but unlikely. Seeing as she was at the tree first, and he’d just shown up. Sure speaking to him could have been, and especially disturbing his guitar playing this morning could have been. But with Lucas, she didn’t often consider that possibility. She would, probably, in the future, but he’d said it didn’t. At least it hadn’t yet, so that was good. It made her smile, it made her happy.
“Good to hear, Lucas. I will… remember that.” She said, not really able to voice her thoughts any better. “Thanks. So…” She said, letting her o’s trail on, “What now?” She thought aloud.

Lucas watched Jessie's face carefully. It was funny how he had gotten so used to her studying him for answers. Before it had made him feel like she was prying, but now it just felt natural. She smiled at him before offering softly, “Good to hear, Lucas. I will… remember that.”
"And best ya should," he said, nodding his head smartly.
“Thanks. So... What now?”
Lucas chuckled. She was avid for those answers, wasn't she. He stood up, stretching his hands over his head. "Well, Ah don't mean to bail but Ah really need a shower." He wrinkled his nose. "The upside to being a boy is no menstrual cycle like ya girls are so blessed to have. The downside if that ya smell like a barn of skunks in a cabbage patch." He picked up his guitar. "Ah'm sure Ah'll see ya around. What with us being friends and all." He grinned. "Joke's on ya, now ya won't be able to get rid of me."
Lucas chuckled softly before regarding her. He smiled gently as he took the time to look at her differently. She was his friend, this Jessie Twight. Sitting there with her cat Snickers, his beret still on her head, and the firelight gently playing on her face. He was attracted to Jessie, but not in a boyfriend/girlfriend way. She was attracting in the sense of your best friend. She still seemed a bit secluded and paranoid, but who wasn't these days. A small crease entered his brow as he thought something. "Hey, um, Jessie?" He began, mouth still open as if he had to say more. Then he chuckled and shook his head, smiling. "Nah, nevermind. Ah'll see ya around."
He began to walk up the steps to his dorm room when something inside of him just decided to say it. It wouldn't hurt anybody. He turned around on the top of the landing, facing her. "Jessie, Ah'm really glad ya're my friend, ya know. Ah hope that we can do this again sometime." He smiled before disappearing up to his dorm.

When Jessie asked what next Lucas stood. He stretched and she watched him. “Well, Ah don’t mean to bail but Ah really need a shower.” Lucas said. Jessie shrugged her shoulders, letting out a sigh. She probably should be getting to that book she was supposed to be reading. But talking to Lucas was more fun, so she’d put it off.
“No problem.” She said, standing up as she leaned Snickers against her shoulder.
“The upside to being a boy is no menstrual cycle like ya girls are so blessed to have.” He added. Jessie’s eyes widened before she started to laugh. She’d only lessened her laughter by the time Lucas added “The downside is that ya smell like a varn of skunks in a cabbage patch.”
“Was that even supposed to make sense?” Jessie giggled. He merely grabbed his guitar and added,
“Ah’m sure Ah’ll see ya around. What with us being friends and all. Joke’s on ya, now ya won’t be able to get rid of me.” Jessie raised an eye brow. She highly doubted she’d be trying to get rid of Lucas anytime soon. Unless, perhaps, he kept up those weird analogies.
“Hey, um, Jessie?” Lucas said. Jessie smiled at him patiently, but he simply put in, “Nah, nevermind. Ah’ll see ya around.” shaking his head. Jessie rolled her eyes. She didn’t like it when people didn’t finish their thoughts. But oh well.
As he made his way up the steps, Jessie let Snickers down, since he now seemed to want to go explore the common room. But when she heard his voice from the top steps and Jessie turned to look at him. “Jessie, Ah’m really glad ya’re my friend, ya know. Ah hope we can do this again sometime.” He smiled, entering his dorm room.
Jessie grinned. That was good to hear. She was looking forward to it. It was good to have something like that to look forward to.
