Casey sighed, Chris wasn’t the happiest topic, but Clover was just depressing.
“What happened to her?” Happened? Well… she got mad at Chris and Jude, stormed off to the forest, got tied up and attacked… basically. “Do they know how to fix it? He must feel really awful. I can’t imagine if one of my brothers was so sick he was always in the hospital. Is she a student then? I mean is she at the school infirmary because he is here, or is she actually a student? And does she ever get to study? Do they think she will be better soon?”
Well, well, Julie liked to ask questions, but she came to the right place. Clover wasn’t able to talk. Chris wouldn’t tell. Jude was too emotional. And then there was Casey, uninvolved but quite informed.
“Clover got attacked in the forbidden forest.” Way to go, Christos, that was the watered down version. “They don’t know how to make her better. Asher is quite involved in the search though. She’s constantly ill. They’re half werewolf, and she’s sick a lot because of that. She doesn’t transform or anything, she’s just ill and weak. But this is worse than usual. Anyway, it really upsets Asher, but he doesn’t act all that… emotional.” Casey was sure that Chris was going to punch him when he told him what he’d told Julie today, but he felt like sharing with someone. It wasn’t as if Chris liked to talk about his emotions.
“Yes, Clover is a student. Sixth year. She used to be able to get her homework from Asher… but now that she’s in a coma… she hasn’t, obviously. I don’t wish any of this one anyone. Neither what Clover goes through or what Asher goes through.”

Julie saw Casey sigh at the question about his friends sister. Not a good sign, but if he was willing to talk, she certainly was interested in knowing what was the matter.
“Clover got attacked in the forbidden forest.” Julie blinked at that. She what? Well, this was going to be a strange story. She could tell. Anything to do with a forest that was forbidden . . . or anything else that was forbidden, simply had to be a strange tale.
“They don’t know how to make her better.” Never a good thing. She wondered if it was something unique to the forbidden forest that had attacked her. She wondered where this forbidden forest was. She thought maybe she recalled hearing a teacher mention it at orientation . . . in the do not enter, do not discuss, do not even consider category. Those usually sounded like fun, not that she had checked any of them out yet, but attacked. She could do without attacked.
“Asher is quite involved in the search though.” She should hope so. Big brothers had an obligation to their little sisters. Take care of them. Parents tended to forget that rule at times, but big brothers . . . well, she had two of them. She would know.
“She’s constantly ill.” That was sad. No one liked to be sick. Julie had been sick a few times in her life, but the idea of being sick most or all of the time. Well, it was a foreign concept that she did not like.
“They’re half werewolf.” They were what?! That was so cool. She’d never really considered the idea of being anything but fully human, but it certainly sounded neat. “And she’s sick a lot because of that.” Oh. Scratch the cool part. That was sad. She certainly wouldn’t want something that would make her sickly. But then he didn’t mention his friend being sick, so maybe it was more than just being part werewolf that made his friend’s sister, Clover was it, strange name that, but she liked it. . . Way to get off track, Marlow. Anyway, maybe it was something besides being part werewolf that made Clover get sick. Perhaps that was part of it, but surely not all if Chris didn’t get sick.
He was still talking so she turned back her attention to what he was saying. She really needed to work on this listening thing. It was really a poor excuse for a person who didn’t . . . focus, Julie. “She doesn’t transform or anything, she’s just ill and weak.” She didn’t even get to transform . . . what was a werewolf? They transformed. She really did need to learn these things.
“But this is worse than usual. Anyway, it really upsets Asher, but he doesn’t act all that… emotional.” Well, some people didn’t. Sandy wasn’t really someone who liked to talk about emotions. Todd, on the other hand was the first one to say “I love you,” when he saw you, even before Julie.
“Yes, Clover is a student. Sixth year. She used to be able to get her homework from Asher… but now that she’s in a coma… she hasn’t, obviously.” Yeah, that made sense. Most people couldn’t do their homework when in a coma. There were the limited few that made you wonder if they could . . . at least in the magical world, but limited was probably making it sound like more people that it was. Sixth year, huh. That made her five years older than Julie. She wondered what she looked like. Maybe she should ask, but Casey was talking again, so she figured she needed to keep listening. After all, one never knew when one might miss an extremely important phrase. “I don’t wish any of this one anyone. Neither what Clover goes through or what Asher goes through.”
“What’s a werewolf?” Julie popped out hoping it didn’t make her sound too stupid. “And if they transform, how come Chris and Clover don’t? Or does he and not she, since you only said that she didn’t?” Another thought from earlier in his words popped into her head and she asked this, too. “And what’s the deal with this forbidden forest. I suppose it is forbidden for just that reason, because people get attacked, but how did it get that way. Is it a magical thing or just they push all the stuff they want to avoid in their, so it doesn’t get into the school?”

Well if that wasn’t the most unhappy thing Casey’d ever discussed, he didn’t know what was. He knew Chris wouldn’t be happy with him for sharing, but hey, Casey did have other friends, and he liked to talk to them. And since he spent most of his attentions on Chris and his problems, he felt like explaining that to someone sometimes. Even though Chris would hurt him if he knew. He mentally shrugged, Chris could try and hurt him all he wanted. Three inches shorter, but fairly fit, he could punch, but Casey was faster, and more agile. Either way, Casey would, in this case, have allowed a few hits to his person, out of fairness, and tried to dodge the rest.
“What’s a werewolf?” What? Where had that come from? Casey spun around in a circle, then realized, yes, the question had in fact come from Julie. What had she just asked? A werewolf? She didn’t know what a werewolf was? Honestly?! Casey bit the inside of his mouth to let her keep going. “And if they transform, how come Chris and Clover don’t? Or does he and not she, since you only said that she didn’t?” Nope, nope. Chris didn’t transform, neither of them did. It really didn’t seem to effect Chris, unless steak being your favorite food was a result of partial lycanthropy. He didn’t think it was, but here, it didn’t sound that far fetched. Chris was also quite a fast runner, as it turned out, but that might just be a coincidence. Then there was his aggression. But Casey assumed that was all just from agitation over Clover’s condition. He sighed, he didn’t know why it made Clover sick but not Chris, perhaps her immune system was just took weak for the Lycanthropy, or Chris’s was too strong for it. Or maybe Chris knew something Casey didn’t, it was possible.
“And what’s the deal with this forbidden forest. I suppose it is forbidden for just that reason, because people get attacked, but how did it get that way. Is it a magical thing or just they push all the stuff they want to avoid in their, so it doesn’t get into the school?” That was the final straw.
“You don’t know what the Forbidden Forest is?! Didn’t they at least mention it to the first years?!” Casey gawked, a hand shooting up to his hat to hold it close to his head. He recalled the first night, at least the Ravenclaw prefect, the boy one, had informed all the first year Ravenclaw’s about the Forbidden Forest. Who was that again? Oh… wait… that was Casey. He was a prefect, yeah… insane. “Well… if you don’t know what a werewolf is… or The Forbidden Forest… or any of the basics of magic, you can ask me. Why?” Casey asked, wishing he could do a flip right then for effect. He could do a flip, but that would kind of ruin a bit of the secrecy of his spy-ness. “Because I’m a prefect, and I guess that’s what we do… answer questions and help and whatever else.” He shrugged.
“Now… a werewolf,” he said, sitting down, “Is a lycanthrope. Don’t expect you to know that one if you don’t know what a werewolf is. It’s like… a werewolf, urban legend that’s not a legend. They get bitten by a werewolf, not sure how it all started. But when they’re bitten then they’re infected. The infected werewolf turns into a wolf, more or less, when the moon is full. A full moon, haven’t you heard this all before?” He asked, sighing, “Anyway, they do that. But Asher and Clover are only half werewolf, so they don’t transform. I don’t know why Asher doesn’t get sick, impervious for some reason. But the Forbidden Forest is off limits to students.” He said seriously, hiding the little fact that a lot of students went anyway. Julie was an impressionable first year, she didn’t need that sort of encouragement. “It’s full of magical creatures that I guess you wouldn’t know anything about. Including wolves, though wolves themselves aren’t magical. But they’re dangerous, so it’s safest to not go in there. Any questions?”

Julie watched warily at Casey spun around at her latest question. Apparently knowing what a werewolf was, was another one of those magical duhs, something everyone knew. Everyone, that is, except Julie. He continued to stare at her incredulously as she spoke. Was it so hard to believe that some witches and warlocks simply didn’t get the same education on magic before attending Hogwarts, especially witches with a muggle parent.
“You don’t know what the Forbidden Forest is?! Didn’t they at least mention it to the first years?!” Julie sighed. Yet another thing she had obviously missed, and this one was something she should have learned at school, but hadn’t. He started messing with his hat. In the short time that she had known him, she had figured out that this was done when he was upset. The reason in this case was obvious, he wasn’t liking the answers he was getting from her.
“Well… if you don’t know what a werewolf is… or The Forbidden Forest… or any of the basics of magic, you can ask me. That was nice of him to offer. She certainly needed someone to help her with . . . just about everything magic. She tuned back in because he was still talking. Considering he was being so nice to her and helping her learn, he certainly deserved her attention. “Why? Because I’m a prefect, and I guess that’s what we do… answer questions and help and whatever else.” Julie grinned. She did know what a prefect was. Excitement sparkled in her eyes. “I know what prefects are,” she informed him with a growing grin. How could she not, when she finally knew something?
“Now… a werewolf, is a lycanthrope. A what? “Don’t expect you to know that one if you don’t know what a werewolf is.” So true. “It’s like… a werewolf, urban legend that’s not a legend. They get bitten by a werewolf, not sure how it all started. But when they’re bitten then they’re infected. The infected werewolf turns into a wolf, more or less, when the moon is full.” A wolf?! That’s cool. “A full moon, haven’t you heard this all before?” It was a vague idea of something from a movie. Nothing very concrete and more fake than the obvious reality. Casey sighed. Julie was certain he was very frustrated with her or perhaps with her lack of knowledge. He didn’t seem like someone who would get annoyed at a person just because they didn’t know stuff.
“Anyway, they do that. But Asher and Clover are only half werewolf, so they don’t transform. I don’t know why Asher doesn’t get sick, impervious for some reason. But the Forbidden Forest is off limits to students.” Maybe whoever was supposed to tell her about the Forbidden Forest just skipped it, figuring if she didn’t know about it, she wouldn’t end up there.
“It’s full of magical creatures that I guess you wouldn’t know anything about. Including wolves, though wolves themselves aren’t magical. But they’re dangerous, so it’s safest to not go in there. Any questions?” Loads. Where to start? “Thank you for being so patient. I guess there just is a lot I didn’t learn about all this, that I probably should have. I bet it’s because I’m a girl and Mom didn’t think it was ladylike. She is all about ladylike.” Julie indicated her brand new, crease still intact jeans. “Hence the fact that I have never owned a pair of jeans before now.” She smirked. “It certainly ruined a lot of dresses and skirts when I was climbing trees though.” Another thought came to mind, so she voiced it. “Which of Chris and Clover’s parents is a werewolf? I assume that is why they are half werewolf.”

Casey noticed Julie seemed a bit perturbed when he spun around. But really? He was beginning to think she lived in a box. He knew some Muggle kids, in particular some annoying friends of his cousin, and they knew loads about magical legends. One of them was determined to become a werewolf someday, while the other didn’t believe it one bit. His cousin and her friends just annoyed Casey, so he’d run them out of his room briefly after that conversation. But he’d come to expect even Muggles knew what werewolves were, and witches should know the Forbidden Forest, at least ones attending Hogwarts.
“I know what prefects are,” Julie piped up. Casey gave her a smirk as she grinned. She was certainly proud of knowing something, and he was happy for her. He hoped she knew what a Prefect was, or he was going to have to act hurt and ashamed.
When he offered her the chance to ask him questions, she perked up again, “Thank you for being so patient.” He smiled, forcing himself not to act arrogant and ruin the moment.
“You’re abundantly welcome.” He said quietly, and earnestly.
“I guess there just is a lot I didn’t learn about all this, that I probably should have.” Julie said. Casey nodded, giving her a sympathetic smile. “I bet it’s because I am girl and Mom didn’t think it was ladylike.” Casey scoffed. Ladylike? Sounded like a certain girl he knew. But she claimed being a witch was the most elegant and ladylike thing a girl could do. He felt no need to mention that to Julie. “She is all about ladylike.” Sounded like another girl he knew. Two of them actually. And one was his mother. But he wasn’t a girl, so it hadn’t effected him… much. “Hence the fact that I have never owned a pair of jeans before now.”
“Sorry.” Casey mumbled. He could live without jeans. Khaki’s and sweat pants were alright, but he was sure if jeans weren’t allowed, neither were either of those. “It certainly ruined a lot of dresses and skirts when I was climbing tree though.” Casey was busy imagining that, with a grin, when Julie asked another, less, in his opinion, cheerful question, “Which of Chris and Clover’s parents is a werewolf? I assume that is why they are half werewolf.”
Casey cleared his throat and glanced around casually, “Their father. He’d be the werewolf.” He sighed. “So is that all?” He asked, his serious expression changing to something more good humored.

When Julie said that she knew what a prefect was she saw that Casey seemed to stand a bit taller. She wondered if perhaps he was a prefect. He certainly knew a lot of things and he was nice, so she thought he deserved to be a prefect.
“You’re abundantly welcome,” he told her causing her to give him another happy smile. She really did appreciate him explaining things to her.
He gave her a sympathetic look when she explained admitted that she had a lot to learn.
“Sorry,” he told her when she said jeans weren’t allowed. Then, he grinned as she told him how this didn’t prevent her from playing how she wanted to.
His smile fell when she asked, once more about his friends. “Their father. He’d be the werewolf.” He sighed. “So is that all?” She scruntched her face in thought. “Would it help to explain my lack of knowledge if I added that Mom didn’t think TV was ladylike either?” She grinned. “Todd said it was bolderdash, whatever that is. Even Sandy would sneak me to the movies sometimes on his vacations, and him as proper as he is. I guess my brothers didn’t agree with Mom. I heard Dad say once that Mom had strange ideas, but she was Mom, so do as she said. The next day Sandy made me a magical bookcase. Did you know such things existed. Mom and Dad didn’t know about it, so I was allowed it. It had a hiding spell, so that when anyone other than the three of us was in the room, the bookcase became invisible and intan . . . intangi . . . intangible, that’s the word, and so did anything on it at the time.” She grinned mischieviously. “Todd hid on it one time. It was so funny. He was in trouble for something or another and Dad was looking everywhere for him, but whenever he entered my room, the bookcase disappeared and so did Todd. It was a big bookcase.”

Casey liked to see Julie smile, which she did a lot. He wanted to feel like he was helping her, and he knew some people who would have called her a lost cause. As far as he was concerned, she just didn’t have the pre-assigned knowledge they were all blessed with. Where you came from didn’t decide your destiny, and it didn’t even decide how well you could do in school. She had the next ten years to catch up, and from what Casey could tell of her, she would easily be able to get ahead. She was bright and inquisitive, the teachers might get a bit weary of her after a while, but eventual they would get used to her, Casey was fairly certain of that.
“Would it help to explain my lack of knowledge if I added that Mom didn’t think TV was ladylike either?” Well that certainly helped a bit. TV was a good source for all things believed fake and unrealistic, and when they turned out to be real and true, it even qualified as educational. But Casey wasn’t one to be a couch potatoe,
“Books help too. Get as many sci-fi stories as you can hide in a book bag and read them all night, they would help a lot. A whole lot more of those are true than you might think.” He said softly, listening to her continue.
“Todd said it was balderdash, whatever that is.”
“Balderdash means nonsense.” Casey mumbled.
“Even Sandy would sneak me to the movies sometimes on his vacations, and him as proper as he is. I guess my brothers didn’t agree with Mom. I heard Dad say once that Mom had strange ideas,” Casey knew what that was like, “but she was mom, so do as she said.” Also knew what that was like. “ The next day Sandy made me a magical bookcase. Did you know such things existed? Mom and Dad didn’t know about it, so I was allowed it. It had a hiding spell, so that when anyone other than the three of us was in the room, the bookcase became invisible and intan . . . intangi . . . intangible, that’s the word, and so did anything on it at the time.” It pained Casey to hear a word searched for. He knew the right word immediately, but he didn’t want to interrupt any more. “ Todd hid on it one time. It was so funny. He was in trouble for something or another and Dad was looking everywhere for him, but whenever he entered my room, the bookcase disappeared and so did Todd. It was a big bookcase.”
“That’s quite a story, Julie.” Casey laughed, “My family is nothing like that… we have a lot of magic everywhere, but then again most families aren’t all that alike, I suppose. But it’s fine if you don’t know everything yet… just keep asking questions and you are bound to get caught up very quickly.” Casey said, grinning at her.

“Books help too. Get as many sci-fi stories as you can hide in a book bag and read them all night, they would help a lot. A whole lot more of those are true than you might think.” Julie liked that idea. Science fiction as a study guide. “Turning science fiction into science fact, huh?”
“Balderdash means nonsense,” she heard Casey mumble. Her lips formed an “o”. That made a lot of sense. Todd thought a lot of things Mom did were nonsense.
“That’s quite a story, Julie,” Casey laughed. She liked his laugh. “My family is nothing like that… we have a lot of magic everywhere, but then again most families aren’t all that alike, I suppose. But it’s fine if you don’t know everything yet… just keep asking questions and you are bound to get caught up very quickly,” Casey said, grinning at her.
She grinned back. “Well, I’m glad you don’t think I’m a lost cause. Mazie, she’s a girl I went to mortal school with, said I was hopeless with anything pertaining to normalcy.” She gave him a mischievous look. “At least she said that until I beat her in every event in a PE class contest. I came in first place in several of them, but I beat her in ever one.” She winked at him. “Mom was horrified when I came home, said it was most undignified and unladylike, but Daddy liked the blue ribbons. I did get scolded for ripped tights and several tears in my dress, but it was fun.”

“Turning science fiction into science fact, huh?” Casey grinned at what Julie said,
“Yeah, something like that.” He chuckled. Julie had a naïve sense of wonder that Casey reluctantly admitted to having a bit of that himself.
“Well, I’m glad you don’t think I’m a lost cause. Mazie, she’s a girl I went to mortal school with, said I was hopeless with anything pertaining to normalcy. At least she said that until I beat her in every event in a PE class contest. I came in first place in several of them, but I beat her in ever one. Mom was horrified when I came home, said it was most undignified and unladylike, but Daddy liked the blue ribbons. I did get scolded for ripped tights and several tears in my dress, but it was fun.”
“You shouldn’t let rules ruin your life. Rules are not made to be broken, but some should never have been made. People should never confine you to what they want you to become. If your personality does not harm anyone then no one has the right to try to pull it from you. Unless you are rude and inconsiderate…” he said, frowning as an image came to his mind, “then your mother shouldn’t have such a problem… but I’m not trying to be disrespectful of your mother, really.” Casey said, quickly looking at Julie again to make sure she understood.
“I’ll help you here as much as I can before I graduate, if you need it. And maybe you can mellow out my cousin.” Casey laughed lightly.

“Yeah, something like that.” Julie smiled in response. She always liked it when she actually got something. She really appreciated that he was willing to listen to her and help her some.
“You shouldn’t let rules ruin your life.” It was an interesting thing to say. It seemed to her that she managed to live her life just as a life and rules were just what she dealt with. “Rules are not made to be broken, but some should never have been made. People should never confine you to what they want you to become.” Well, Momma certainly had a mold she wanted her only daughter to fit and it seemed to distress her than Julie was nothing like that.
“If your personality does not harm anyone then no one has the right to try to pull it from you.” Julie giggled at that. Yes, her personality was different than what people wanted. Except maybe her brothers. Despite conflicting personalities themselves, Sandy and Todd seemed to love her just as her and while they nurtured the side of her that was most like them, they didn’t seem annoyed by the side that was not.
“Unless you are rude and inconsiderate…” Something caused Casey to stop and frown before finishing his sentence, “then your mother shouldn’t have such a problem… but I’m not trying to be disrespectful of your mother, really.” Julie smiled. “I don’t think I’m rude or inconsiderate. At least I try not to be.”
Casey had one more thing to say, laughter in his voice, “I’ll help you here as much as I can before I graduate, if you need it. And maybe you can mellow out my cousin.” His cousin? “What do you mean? What’s wrong with your cousin?”

Casey heard Julie giggle. Young girls, giggling. It was nice. Casey knew he would get a really weird, slightly concerned, look from a lot of people if he’d said that out loud. But it was like innocence. A sense that you were still a child and that you didn’t get down on yourself too much, that you could just be happy for a moment, devoid of all worries. Casey felt as if, for a moment, he was being a bit too harsh. The world wasn’t void of joy beyond little girls’ laughter, but still.
“I don’t think I’m rude or inconsiderate. At least I try not to be.” Julie responded with a smile. Casey smiled back. He hadn’t meant to imply, if he had done so, that Julie was inconsiderate or rude, he had simply gotten lost in his thought. But then Julie asked, “What do you mean? What’s wrong with your cousin?”
“Oh… she…” Casey stumbled over his words for a moment, then recovered, “Kelsey is just very… conceited and spoiled. She’s a second year.” He ground his teeth a bit when his mouth was closed, and then kept going, “She’s getting better, I suppose… but we’ve never gotten along very well. Gryffindor…” He sort of mumbled the last part. It wasn’t in his nature to bad-mouth anyone, and he knew the only things he would, or could, say about his cousin would be putting her down. So he’d keep it short and simple. He remembered, after a moment, that the two girls must be in the same house, and he raised an eye brow. Perhaps they had, or would, meet. If they did meet, Julie could form her own opinions of Kelsey, without Casey ruining things for his cousin beforehand.
"But that's just my opinion of her... you can form your own." Casey added for good measure.
