Ruana Sremmos was a vampire. Hard as it is to imagine, yes, the girl was bitten. It was at the masquerade, and it was all Hope Taylor's fault. She had blackmailed Ruana into wearing those tiny leather scraps and carry around that stupid whip. Every guy within fifty feet was staring, unless of course that guy was Ike, who was too busy squirting people with his utters. Ruana preffered to block that out of her memory. In fact, she wished she could block the entire evening out.
The vampire had Ruana and the entire crowd convinced that he was going to do "magic" and needed an "assistant". Who knew that in vampire lingo, that meant "I'm horny and need a victim". Ruana had been the chosen victim--again. And not only was he craving what Ruana was unwilling to give--again--he was hungry. Yes, hungry for blood--her blood. And he bit her. And now, she was a vampire. That was it in a nutshell.
It wasn't until after the ball was over that people realized what had happened. At first, she was rushed to St. Mungo's, to see if here was anything they could do to stop the venom from polluting her bloodstream, but it was too late. They had her in constraints and were fixing her from whatever damage the vampire did by biting and raping her.
The only thing most of the school knew was that the magician was weird. There were rumors going around that he killed someone. No one knew the truth. No one, except Ruana and the staff members. Not even Elle knew yet, for as soon as Ru was out of St. Mungo's, they took her back to the infirmary at Hogwarts, where Katharine Moss helped to stabilize her and keep her from attacking anyone. Blood was supplied to her regularly.
Blood really tasted awful--bitter and metallic--and Ruana went as long as she could not drinking it, fighting her urges to attack passersby. When Katharine finally deemed her able to roam the castle freely, she was released, but Ruana did not want to do any roaming. She simply skulked to her dormitory and lay in bed, dully refusing to attend her classes or communicate with her friends. She would escape in the wee hours of the morning to fetch her jug of blood and return in during dinner to be refilled. She always kept a thermos on her bedside table, and nobody ever inquired what was in it. If they did, Ruana decided to tell them that she was very ill and it was a very potent tea.
In a sense, that was what it was. She considered her new...gift...to be more of an ailment, because who would honestly want to stay inside during the day and drink blood their entire life. And even worse, who would want to live forever? It wasn't as if she would burn if she went outside; that was a myth. She would simply glitter--yes, glitter. Until people knew about and were comfortable with her affliction, Ruana would stay inside at all times. It was not that hard in a large castle like Hogwarts. She just couldn't play quidditch just yet, or attend Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures.
Today, like any other day, was a lazy day. Ruana was laying in bed, five or six blankets piled on top of her, staring up through the opening at the top of her four poster. The goldenrod colored curtains hung all around her; she closed them, not wanting to see anyone. Some days, she would just sleep all day. No one would really bother her, except with homework questions. Some would bring her soups that tasted fantastic. A few brought her books to read. She'd finished two of them already. Seven more were stacked next to her thermos, their pages never looked at.
Deciding that this was no way to spend her life, just staring at the ceiling, Ruana grabbed another book. She needed to escape. This particular one was Dracula. Ruana scowled. Great, she thought, placing the book at the bottom of the pile and grabbing another. Wonderful wat to start my escape. This next one was called Bet Me, and had a bright blue cover. Hardcover, too. Whoever got this for her must have had a lot of money to spare. Smiling a bit, Ruana snuggled down into her bed and began to read.
