Creating the best wand for your character can be unexpectedly difficult, so here's a master post of information that might be helpful!
Wand Woods:
- Ebony
- Holly
- Willow
- Ash
- Rosewood
- Mahogany
- Yew
- Vinewood
- Oak
- Hornbeam
- Maple
- Beech
- Redwood
- Birchwood
- Other woods you can come up with.
Wand Cores:
- Dragon Heartstring
- Phoenix Feather
- Unicorn Tail Hair
- Veela Hair (considered unstable)
- Others you may come up with
In determining wand length, character height is a useful indicator. If your character is not done growing, height wise, it is good to use the height they will stop growing at rather than their current height.
Character Height = Wand length
4'6"--4'11" = 6.4"--9.7"
5'--5'5" = 9.8"--11.9"
5'6"--5'11" = 12"--13.9"
6'--6'5" = 14"--14.6"
4'6"--4'11" = 6.4"--9.7"
5'--5'5" = 9.8"--11.9"
5'6"--5'11" = 12"--13.9"
6'--6'5" = 14"--14.6"
Function:
Wands are renoun throughout the wizarding world as a source of power. Without his/her wand, a wizard/witch is restricted on the spells they can use and even what magical items they can use. Wands are used for almost every kind of magic, though there are a few rare things that do not require the use of a wand. The ease and controlability of the wand makes up an enormous part of the wizard/witch lifestyle.
How to Use:
Normally a swish of the wrist and an audible incantation is enough for most spells but some require more advanced movements or some easier spells call for only pointing the wand. If your desire to make your spell work is high enough for the power of the spell, you may be able to make your wand work without the use of an incantation.
Notes:
The length of a wand is in accordance with the user's height or hand length. The longest wand known to readers is Hagrid's wand at 16 inches. The shortest known wand to readers is Umbridge's, only described as "unusually short." I would guess it around 6-7 inches.
Sibling wands (ex: Harry & Voldemort's wands are siblings because of Fawkes' feather) cannot perform properly against eachother. They may mess up or not work entirely.
Notable Wands & Their Owners:
- Harry: Holly, Phoenix feather, 11 inches, supple
- Voldemort: Yew, Phoenix feather, 13 ½ inches, powerful
- Lily: Willow, 10 ¼ inches, swishy, good for Charms
- James: Mahogany, 11 inches, excellent for Transfiguration
- Hagrid: Oak, 16 inches, bendy
- Ron: Willow, Unicorn tail hair, 14 inches
- Hermione: Vinewood, Dragon Heartstring
- Fleur Delacour: Rosewood, hair of veela, 9 ½ inches, inflexible
- Cedric Diggory: Ash, Unicorn tail hair, 12 ¼ inches, springy
- Viktor Krum: Hornbeam, Dragon heartstring, 10 ¼ inches, quite thick and rigid
