Jessie began dancing around the common room. She was already wearing her orange dress. It was open in the back, revealing her newly tanned skin. She’d spent so much time at the Great Lake, talking, reading, writing, and actually just tanning to pass the time that she was actually tan. Not much, but still tan. The gold strip just below her chest turned into straps over her arms, which were now up in the air. She was spinning around in circles now, wearing her gold heels. Her short brown hair was completely straight, coming down to her shoulders. She’d let it grow out over time, something she didn’t usually do. But now that she actually had a friend, she had less focus on pointless things. The things she used to fill her time with, just to forget how lonely she was. At this point she didn’t have anyone to talk to, the two first year boys had seen her come down, all dressed up for the masquerade, and had ran off. She didn’t know why, but she didn’t really think about it.
She was wearing her lace choker, gold, silver, curls, and beads, just like her mask. She had never felt more girly, and she felt like a fairy. She couldn’t stop smiling. She had never had this sort of chance to dress up. There was that time that Zach had asked her to a school dance, just to “show off my amazing cousin”, but she’d declined, telling him he would do better accepting one of his eighteen, which was only as of that morning, requests from girls he wasn’t related to. He’d declined.
Jessie stopped spinning once she felt a bit less energetic. She missed Zach and Megan. But Megan was preoccupied, touring Ireland with her mother. Poor Zach was at home, working with his uncle Leo. He claimed to be intensely bored, Jessie could understand. She’d been bored, which was why she read so many books. Volumes upon volumes, just because she had the time. She grinned, she couldn’t stop smiling. Life was good. She decided it was anyway. No one was ill, nothing was due, and she had a night to be a girl. A girly girl, and a well dressed one too. Her uncle Jared and her father had insisted she get the very dressed she wanted, and they’d made sure she hadn’t argued. She was so happy to have them. And so excited about tonight. She had no date, but she wasn’t concerned, nothing could bring her mood down.
