It was early in the morning on a Saturday and the owlery was filled with dying hoots. The sun was rising, and the owls were getting ready to sleep for the day.
A large figure crept up the spiral stairs; well, more like stomped up the stairs--he was very large. Not so much fat as he was tall, but still large.
The half-giant student's large hand was grasped around a rolled up parchment that was bound with twine. Attached to it was a small brown parcel.
"Leko," his low voice called out, and a large barn own opened its groggy eyes. "I need you. It's important." The bird have a disapproving hoot and glided from the rafters to Jourdon's arm.
After attaching the package and letter to the bird's claw, the boy gave directions to the bird, whi groggily hooted, and, with a swoosh of his enormous wings, escaped out the window into the crisp morning air.
The large boy sighed and plopped down on one of the few scattered chairs.

"Oh shit... shit... shit..." Arez muttered angrilly. He ran up the stairs, tripping clumsily. Groaning, he stumbled to his feet, continuing his ascent.
"Of all the days..." Arez ranted to himself as he stepped into the owlery. "Could've reminded me, parasite!"
No. Pathetic brat.
Arez scowled, considering slamming his head against the wall. Sadly, that wouldn't change the smugness of Nova-the-Parasite.
That was when Arez realised another person was in the owlery, and said person had just seen him talking to Nova.
"Eh...hi..."
Lao's gonna kill me!
About time, too. I don't know what Ixie-Pixie sees in you...
SHUT UP!

Having been facing the opposite direction, Jourdon had not seen anybody ascend the stairs. As a matter of fact, he had been almost too cought up in his own thoughts to hear them, but alas, he heard a little bit.
Jourdon turned around. The boy seemed to be talking to himself, but Jourdon for some reason did not think this odd. He smiled bleakly. "Hi," he returned, his voice quiet and low. His eyes drifted around the owelry (not literally, ha) looking at the variety of owls.
"I'm Jourdon Paolini..." he announced boldly, saving Arez the trouble of having to introduce himself first. Jourdon hated doing it, but he was gentleman enough to do so.

Arez grinned sheepishly. "I'm Arez Smythe."
Wow... this guy... he's SO COOL!
Tossing a grin over his shoulder, Arez glances up, scanning the masses of brown, white and tawny owls. He beckoned to one. "Eh...owl? C'mere? Please?"
His feeble request was ignored. Arez swore, glaring up at the so-called intelligent owls. If they were so smart, why didn't they ever respond to him?

The boy called to an owl. His attempt failed. The owl stared blankly. Jourdon chuckled. "This is how you do it."
He stood up and held his arm out to the bird, then looked back at Arez. "You should choose one owl and learn its name. They each have a little tag on them...somewhere. This one's Kenny."
Jourdon looked back up at Kenny. "Kenny," he cooed gently. The bird looked over at him and twitched, "Got something for you to send. C'mon Kenny." Kenny hooted and glided down to Jourdon, who then passed the bird over to Arez. "Voila."

Arez's eyes filled with stars, sparkles and admiration as he glances between the owl - Kenny - and Jourdon.
"Wow..." he breathed airily, "you're so COOL!"
LAME. Nova growled. For once, Arez ignored him.
Afraid Kenny would fly away, Arez tied the badly wrapped parcel and card to his leg, confirming his sister's name and address on the front. Slowly, he stepped closer to the window, watching in awe as the bird spread its wings and flew out the window, screeching slightly.
"It's incredible that I forget my sister's birthday," Arez announced with a sigh.

Jourdon looked puzzled. He had never before been called cool. Not ever. Not once in his life.
Well, there's a first time for everything.
"Uh, thanks." He replied, then listening to Arez talk about his sister's birthday. He held back a chortle.
"That's not so bad, tell her the postage was backed up," Jourdon reassured him, then shrugged, "How long ago was her birthday, though?"
Knowing brothers, it was probably a long time ago. His cousin had forgotten his sister's and Jourdon's birthdays many a time, and was often late by weeks-even months.

"Yesterday," Arez replied. "She won't mind, Athena's nice, but I think one of my friends has a crush on her - he'll mind."
And he can also tear me limb from limb... Arez thought with a wince.
You're a complete retard and I look forward to the day you die.
Arez rubbed his temple, muttering about parasites who need a body of their own.

"Yesterday?" Jourdon asked, incredulous, "That's nothing. If you're friend gets mad, that's overreacting a lot, no offense to him." He cleared his throat. "That's not a big deal," his voice trailed off, he remembered the time when the entire household had forgotten his birthday. It was not a happy day. It resulted in a lot of tears, apologies, and a bloodied nose.
"Mine was for my father," he said plainly, not explaining who his father was, "I don't live with him, I live with my aunt and uncle. Mum died when I was born." Jourdon didn't go into great detail. He just figured he'd get the important stuff out in the open in case the two of them became friends. That would save him the pain of explaining later.

"Over-reacting? Yeah, sounds like Lao. It's understandable, once you crack his shell."
Arez felt a surge of sympathy for Jourdon. He had heard worse, but this guy definately had things a lot worse than him.
"That sucks, about your family," Arez said mournfully. "I'm lucky, normal family, 'cept my sister and me were adopted. They're all nice, though, so you'd never know."
Arez smiled up at Jourdon. "Though, your past sounds interesting... kinda dark, but all heroes have stuff like that. And, being different is much better than being normal, I'd say."
You TART! Are you flirting with this guy?
Arez resisted the urge to growl. Stupid parasite! I'm being friendly!
Yeah, too friendly. You'd better not upset the pixie.
Inner Arez rolled his eyes. He shared his body with the bastard and all he got was a storm of insults, threats and taunts. How it had happened, when it had happened and how it had happened was fairly mysterious. He was just stuck with Nova.
And I hate every second you SPEAK!

"Interesting," Jourdon repeated slowly, "I guess you could say so." He returned to his chair, but this time turned it to hace Arez before sitting back down. "From another's point of view, I guess it would be." The owlery was now relatively silent, except for the occasional ruffle of wings or a muffled murmur of a hoot, and the two boys talking.
Jourdon shrugged. "I try not to feel bad about myself about it. I bet there are loads of people who's parents are both dead, or are just rotten. I'm lucky, I guess. I grew up well, aside from never meeting my father in person. He's a decent...um...being." Jourdon blushed. He didn't talk about his past much. Something about Arez sort of....coaxed it out of him.
"So how about you?" He asked, leaning back a little so that the front two legs of the chair were off the floor. "Anything interesting in the past of Mr. Smythe?"

Arez ran a hand through his long hair thoughtfully. "Um... no, nothing too interesting. Unless you have interest in parasite souls, but that's just plain weird..."
Nice going jack-ass!
...I'm coming across as suicidal to you, aren't I Nova?
That and extremely retarded.

Joudon mursed his lips and nodded thoughtfully. "Parasites," he repeated, "you've got one? That's interesting. Tell it I said 'Hi'."
God, I'm dumb.
"I have...well, had...a friend with a similar...gift. She's kind of...left the school, however. Her and another friend. That's sort of a secret though, so don't go leaking it all around. Not that you would," he added as to not offend the boy, "but you know. Just protecting a friend. Actually, she doesn't know I know about...the thing, or even that she left. But, well...you know...she kind of...changed once...when I was with her, and I guess I sort of...figured it out?"
Jourdon realized that he had paused a lot. "And I'm rambling and probably completely boring you, aren't I?" He shook his head, grinning. "Sorry 'bout that."

Tell him to burn in hell. Nova growled.
"Oh, that'd be Hisoka's friend... Ruana, right?" Arez asked, ignoring Nova's rude comment. "That doesn't bore me, though it'd be cool if Nova actually did anything other than whine."
How dare you! I am Nova, the -
"Right now? He's starting a rant about how incredibly awesome and powerful he is and that if he released his true powers I'd be ripped apart, which is what he wants but if he does that we'll both be dead," Arez summarised aloud.
Damn right! Some day everyone will realise that Nova is not a creature to be crossed!
"I wonder how 'Soka and Ruana are doing..." Arez wondered, gazing toward the ceiling athough expecting it to turn into a giant television and reveal the answer. It didn't happen.

Jourdon nodded. "Tell your parasite not to gloat. Nobody likes it. Tell him not to be a pest." He laughed. "I have a feeling me and said parasite are off to a wonderful start." Jourdon grinned.
"Yeah, Hisoka." He looked at Arez skeptically and, too, glanced at the ceiling, the shook it off. "I'm sure they're fine. Do you know why they left?" He asked. He really didn't know.
"So..." Jourdon started, leaning forward again and scratching his head. "Got a girlfriend?" He asked this question casually as to not sound obvious. He wasn't dumb. And Arez seemed smart.
Not bad looking, either.
Oh, shut up.
