[Continuation of this thread.] As the Sinatra music began to play softly in the background and Ellendie put her arms around his neck, Ike was easily able to block out all the extra noise around him. He was really having fun. It wasn't the wild, exciting, mischievious (and usually prank-oriented at someone else's expense) sort of fun he was used to. But there was something right about dancing with Elle, in comparison to all the other people he'd ever done the same with. He liked it. Gently but confidently, he positioned both of his hands on Ellendie's waist and matched the tempo of the song, getting used to the way she moved beside him.

Ellendie felt his hands go to her waist and every inch of her body screamed. She shivered softly and smiled, she loved that feeling. It was just a tingly feeling like it was right for him to be there with her. She followed his movements as she was supose too. She moved in close and wrapped her arms around him more and smiled.
"Zis ees nice... ze song ees lovely." she said in a small whisper. Were you supose to talk while you danced? Or just enjoy their company? She couldn't stand silence at some points, but she wasn't sure what to talk about either. Just being with him made her happy enough.
She listened as the song slowly stopped and then a fast peppy song came on. But she was still dancing slow with him, still holding onto him.

Ike shut his eyes and concentrated on the lyrics to the music that was playing now. If he was correct, it was another Sinatra tune: Fly Me to the Moon.
Even though he didn't listen to music very often --of any genre-- he recognized this particular song because his muggle-born uncle, Rob, had had a ghastly obsession with early big band music from America. Rob used to collect records from old artists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fizgerald, and an assortment of non-vocal big bands like Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and Glen Miller.
Ike didn't particularly like the music, but he had subconsciously memorized some of the lyrics.
Fly me to the moon And let me sing among the stars. Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars.
In other words, hold my hand In other words, baby, kiss me
Fill my heart with song Let me sing for ever more You are all I long for All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true In other words--
Before the last verse was finished, Ike accidentally lost his balance and stumbled forward slightly. He had gotten so caught up with the music and Ellendie's presence that he hadn't been paying attention.
He abruptly put one foot in front of him to balance himself--thankfully, he didn't step on her foot in the process.
"Sorry," he mumbled. One of the hands that had been on her waist was now being run haphazardly over his brown hair, a sure sign of nervousness and embarrassment.
He felt like a moron. They hadn't even been moving their feet much at all and he had almost fallen. When did he get so clumsy?

Ellendie had her eyes closed as she listened and then felt him faulter foward. She opened her eyes and glanced up at him to make sure everything was all right. She smiled at his nervousness now and kissed his cheek "Noting to be sorry for."
She then swayed to the music with him again getting back into step. She leaned in a little closer and was close to resting her head on his chest. But for some reason she just didn't feel it to be right.
She felt people shift around her and move others around. Dancing caused so much movement and so much contact with other people, it was a weird thing. She just wanted to be with Ike and here she was not only with Ike but with a lot of different people. It didn't bother her, ok well it did to some point since she wanted Ike, and alone.
She wrapped her arms around tighter so no one could come in between and break their dancing. She hummed softly to the music and then felt some one push her, her head tilted up she moved forward quickly. Before she knew it she felt her lips pressed against Ike's. For her it felt so right and soft to be there.

Having just recovered from a very awkward moment, Ike was tense. Ellendie's saying that there was "nothing to be sorry for" made him feel a little bit better, and he tried his best to get into step again--his hand had regained its position back on her waist.
He, too, took notice that the crowd was shifting. The faster music must be causing it, he thought.
Ellendie rested her head on his chest, and he responded by pulling her more tightly against him. He absentmindedly looked over all the the heads and toward the door, noting that more and more people were entering the Great Hall.
The dance was filling up.
Dammit.
It was getting noisy, too. Ugh. What if Ellendie said something important and he missed it? All the voices were even drowning out the music! This was ridiculous! It was a Valentine's Ball, you'd think people would be enjoying the company of their date, not talking so loudly that other people couldn't hear. How annoying--
Someone bumped into Ellendie, and without any warning, Ike felt her lips on his. The kiss was completely unexpected, so Ike had no way to prepare for it. He returned it, more out of instinct than passion, then broke it.
"Do you want to go outside?" he asked, a hint of annoyance in his tone. This crowd was going to ruin a perfectly good evening if they didn't do something about it soon.

Ellendie felt is lips pull away and her heart seemed to sink. For a slight second her mind started thinking the worse. Did he not like her that way? Was is wrong to kiss him? Is this going to change everything? She then heard his voice, it was a tad annoyed. She sighed and nodded "Sure. We can go outside." She pulled away slightly and the warmth he had given her slipped away. She liked that warmth. She glanced around the party. So many people were coming now, and things seemed to get on with girls getting tipsy from drinking the spiked punch. She shifted her way out from the crowd and surprisingly her face was turned into a frown, and showed slight anger. How could he not like me? Am I not pretty enough for him? Maybe he just likes friends? Is he just not interested? she sighed and made her way out into the hall. She went out a bit and then found her way out to the balcony for some alone time with him. What was she going to say? She turned as she sat on the edge of the balcony and looked at him "Sorry about the kiss.... I must have read your signals wrong. Now you don't have to go into a speach about you just liking me as a friend. I understand." But why??

Ike was already angry enough at the stupid crowd of people in the Great Hall ruining his and Elle's kiss, and, as they reached the balcony, when he heard her speak, he could tell that she was upset.
But what she said pushed him over the edge.
"Dude," he began, reverting back to the tone he used on his friend Bobby when he was angry. Small fragments of speech were going through his mind at a very fast rate. Signals, just a friend, I understand... "What are you talking about? "
It may not have sounded like a geniune question, but it was. He really wanted to know. He had so many things he wanted to say at this point, but wasn't about to formulate them into complete sentences.
He looked at her, frowning, eyebrows furrowed. He stood a yard or so away, and he wasn't about to get any closer.

Ellendie stared at him and growled. She stood up from the edge and jabbed her finger in her chest "What am I talking about? Was I ze only one zere?" she hissed and then crossed her arms. She was going to be nice and polite about this but here he went all angry at her. "Ike, I keesed you. Usually when someone keeses you, you don' respone weeth an annoyed voice and go to a private spot."
She felt tears weld up in her eyes. Damn eet! I don't want to cry! But she felt them come to her anyway. She turned around and crossed her arms looking over the balcony. She brought a hand up and wiped a tear that decided to slide down her cheek. Why was she crying? Just because he didn't want her as a girlfriend or whatever, doesn't mean he doesn't want her as a friend.
She stayed facing away from him afraid to look at him "I understand eef you just want to be friends, or not even zat anymore since eet could get weird from ze kees." she wispered the last sentence feeling slightly hurt by the whole thing.

Ike watched Ellendie quietly.
"Ike, I keesed you. Usually when someone keeses you, you don' respone weeth an annoyed voice and go to a private spot."
No, not annoyed with you! Never annoyed with you!
His mind whirred back to the day they had met, in front of the Room of Requirement on the 7th floor. She had asked him for help finding a class, and the next moment they were planning their very first prank. He had loved her accent then, he loved it even more now.
She was mischievious, caring, kind; he could never be annoyed with her. The mere possibility of it was entirely out of the question.
With every word she spoke, the scowl on his face lessened and lessened until it resembled nothing at all.
"I understand eef you just want to be friends, or not even zat anymore since eet could get weird from ze kees."
Not friends?! I want to be more than friends! But how am I supposed to tell you that when I don't think I deserve you in the first place?
When she turned around, apparently not wishing for him to see her face, he brought he a hand up to cover his mouth. He shut his eyes and sighed. Oh, how easily the tides could change. Only an hour earlier, he had agreed to be her date for the ball and they were entering the Great Hall together... and now?
Now they were both angry and stressed and their was friendship was at stake. Whatever he said next had better be good, or else they may never have a chance.
He had already upset her enough.
"I...I..."
Nothing. What could he say? What could he possibly say that would do more good than harm? All that he had been feeling in the past five minutes washed over him, and two words came out of his mouth.
"I'm sorry."

Ellendie heard his apology and she closed her eyes. As she did a tear rolled down her cheek. That was not the answer she wanted. She wanted him to pull her in his arms and tell her that he wanted to be with her as much as she wanted to be with him. And kiss her. It seemed like something from the old romance movies. But she liked the idea anyway. It would have been perfect if he did so, but life isn't perfect, it is filled with twists and people who don't know what to say or what to do. But now here she was left with an apology that she didn't want to hear and how was she supose to responde to that?
She had a few images in her mind. Maybe she could have kissed him again. But why do something that he didn't like?
How was she supose to take the sorry anyway? What did he mean? That he was sorry he didn't feel that way? That he yelled at her? Made her cry? All of it? She didn't want him to be sorry she wanted him to want her. She wanted him to just tell her how is going on. How their friendship is going to be.
She turned to Ike, not caring if he saw her tears. They were reasonable tears so she shouldn't be too embarressed about them. She sniffled and stared at him "Why apologize? You are just telling me 'ow you feel no?" her voice sounded more hurt then she had attended "You can not leeve a lie and say 'i like you' when you don't."
A few more tears rolled down her cheeks and she sighed "Ike, I don't want an apology. I just want to know what ees going on." she sniffled a bit more and whiped her tears away. "Now i feel stupeed." She then turned around and looked at the sky.

She was crying. God, she was crying. Why did she have to cry? It made him want to cry, too, and Ike never cried.
"Now I feel stupeed."
Not as stupid as I feel.
She wanted him to clarify? To say what he was sorry for? Wasn't just a simple apology enough?
Again, Ike was making the mistake of thinking that his meaning was clear, that what he meant by that apology was perfectly obvious when, really, it was far from it.
He wasn't good at this, at recognizing emotions. At saying the right thing. At comforting people.
At being in love.
Or... wait. Was it love? Could he say that? Ike wasn't so sure.
But he had to give this a try.
"Okay... okay."
What was he sorry for? What did he mean?
"I'm sorry... for being an idiot. I'm sorry for breaking the kiss. I'm sorry for confusing you, for--" Ike choked up and had to take a deep breath"--for making you cry. I'm sorry for not telling you sooner that I think you're the most beautiful person I've ever laid eyes on..."
He let his hands drop to his sides. It was all or nothing.

Ellendie listened to him and a slight smile came to her lips. Her stomach got butterflies and all she wanted to do was kiss him again. And not a kiss where she was bumped up to him, a true one. One that she did on her own. She turned to him and looke at him. Right then and there she knew he was being sincere and telling her the truth of how he felt.
She took a few steps towards him "Really?" she smiled dispite her tear stained cheeks. "You weren't annoyed weeth me?"
Oh please, Elle, he told you what you wanted what else do you need? More clarafacation? Ellendie rolled her eyes and shook her head "Nevermind ze question." She then went forward and wrapped her arms around his neck in a hug. It felt so right to be there. She loved it. She loved the warmth his body gave hers. It was perfect.

Regardless of whether or not Elle's question needed to be answered or not, Ike responded anyway.
"I was never annoyed with you, Elle, it was everyone else that was bothering me." Ike smiled as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her tightly against him, burying his face in her hair.
It was as though a weight had been lifted off his chest. He didn't have to worry about feeling more than just friendship toward Ellendie because she was feeling the same thing.

Ellendie smiled feeling him hold her tightly. She loved it, every second of it. She turned her head slightly and kissed his cheek "Oh good. Because zat ees where I got upset." she laughed and pressed into him more and closed her eyes.
She could hear people talking outside the balcony and listening to the music. Though the music was barely hearable she was able to pick out bits and peices of it and wrinkled her nose to the wrap song. It was nothing like she wanted to hear. She sighed and listened to the bad rap and waited for the song to change. And once it did it was something fast and peppy.
She sighed and then turned to him and smiled "I am sorry for causing all zis trouble. I just meesunderstood."

"Just so long as we're clear now."
Ike was feeling something unidentifiable after admitting to her that he thought she was beautiful, that he liked her. A lot. He felt weaker.
Weaker... and stronger at the same time. But mostly just weaker.
Did this incident tonight mean that they weren't just regular friends anymore? Had something officially happened between them that would change everything? How fine was the line between love and friendship? You could love a friend, couldn't you?
There were so many questions. Ike knew she couldn't answer all of them at once, but he really needed to know...
Were they still going to be the pranksters they always were? He didn't want that to end. He felt so lucky to have such an intelligent partner-in-crime and he didn't want to give it up.
"We're still...alright, aren't we? I mean... what are we?"
